Alfonso Gonzalez Jr.

Biography
1989, Los Angeles, USA

Alfonso Gonzalez Jr. is an artist whose work developed from close observation of the skilled craft of his father, a commercial sign painter. He draws on the permanence of hand-painted signs and the physical remnants of the Los Angeles weather to tell his own family stories of labour and image-making.
Gonzalez's paintings, while appearing to be passive still lifes, excavate the sedimented interactions that occur on everyday public surfaces. His multi-layered works function as contemporary palimpsests, surfaces on which the original façade has been erased to make room for later writing, but traces of which remain. González's works are not mere metaphors, but objects that sustain the visual as a form of knowledge and language.
